Vulva or Vagina
At one point or another, most women will experience less sensation in the vulva or vagina. It’s normal to experience changes in sensitivity over time, given that many factors contribute to this aspect of your sexual wellness.
If you’re feeling less sensation during intercourse, pinpointing the cause of the change can help you find a solution. Dr. Hayes at Visionary Centre for Women offers a wide range of innovative treatments to boost your sexual gratification.
Common reasons that women feel less sensation in the vulva or vagina include:
Menopause
All women experience menopause, which occurs when the body’s estrogen levels sharply decline. Estrogen is the sex hormone that’s responsible for retaining the moisture and elasticity of the vaginal tissues. So, when estrogen levels drop during menopause, women often notice that the tissues are thinner and drier. As a result, menopausal women often feel less sensation in the vulva or vagina. If menopause is to blame for reduced sensation, you may want to try bio-identical hormone replacement with BioTE® pellets to restore healthy hormone levels!
Vaginal Delivery
Childbirth can cause weakened pelvic floor muscles and vaginal scarring. Many women also feel that the vagina is looser and/or more open after giving birth. These changes can result in reduced sensation in the vulva or vagina. Surgical Vaginal rejuvenation can restore the tightness and tone of the vaginal tissues after childbirth.
Note that a weak pelvic floor for reasons other than childbirth, such as genetics or pelvic surgery, can also inhibit sensation.
Contracted Pelvic Floor Muscles
If the pelvic floor muscles are contracted, blood can’t flow freely to them. Given that blood flow to the vagina is required for sensitivity in the area, this can cause problems during intercourse. Heavy weight lifting, vaginal scarring, and even stress can make the pelvic floor muscles contract!
